Wedding Videography at Thornewood Castle
Thornewood Castle was built between 1908 and 1911 by Chester Thorne for his wife Anne, using architectural elements and brick shipped around Cape Horn from a centuries-old English manor and reassembled on the shore of American Lake in Lakewood, Washington. The estate covers roughly 27,000 square feet, about twelve miles south of Tacoma and forty-two miles south of Seattle, and remains one of the only true Tudor Gothic structures of its scale on the West Coast. The property has since been restored and operates with both indoor rooms and formal outdoor garden space for ceremonies and receptions.
A building assembled from a genuine 400-year-old English manor gives a wedding videographer material that cannot be replicated with modern construction: leaded glass, carved stone, dark wood paneling, and formal gardens laid out to be viewed from specific fixed points rather than wandered through at random. That intentionality in the original design translates directly to camera blocking, since sightlines through the gardens and along the lake edge were built to frame a subject, not just decorate a lawn. The lake itself adds a second surface for reflected light and sky, which softens what would otherwise be the harder, more graphic look of stone and leaded glass elsewhere on the property.
South Puget Sound weather runs cooler and greyer than California through most of the year, and that flatter, more even overcast light is often an advantage against stone architecture this dense, since it holds detail in dark materials that direct sun would blow out or bury in shadow. What makes Thornewood Castle special for wedding film?
Thornewood Castle was built between 1908 and 1911 from architectural elements shipped from a centuries-old English manor, giving the roughly 27,000-square-foot estate leaded glass, carved stone, and formal gardens on the shore of American Lake. The Puget Sound region's typically overcast light works well against this much stone and dark wood, holding detail that harsher direct sun would lose.
